Why do girls have the inclination to play with dolls?

    Question:

As a toddler, that is, before society was able to tell me what I should and shouldn’t play with, I chose dolls over other toys. Working in a few daycares and kindergarten classes, I came to the realization that many of the young girls preferred dolls over other toys. Why is this? What is it that little girls want to pretend to be little mommies? Is this maternal instinct simply making itself obvious at a young age? I would like to point out that in the daycares and kindergarten classes (ranging from mere infants to grade 1 students), none of the children were encouraged to play with specific types of toys. In fact, myself and other students were often encouraged by the teachers to teach the students that gender and toys are not related, a child can play with any toy. This may help some answerers draw away from saying society is the reason: “In 2002, Gerianne M. Alexander of Texas A&M University and Melissa Hines of City University in London stunned the scientific world by showing that vervet monkeys showed the same sex-typical toy preferences as humans. In an incredibly ingenious study, published in Evolution and Human Behavior, Alexander and Hines gave two stereotypically masculine toys (a ball and a police car), two stereotypically feminine toys (a soft doll and a cooking pot), and two neutral toys (a picture book and a stuffed dog) to 44 male and 44 female vervet monkeys. They then assessed the monkeys’ preference for each toy by measuring how much time they spent with each. Their data demonstrated that male vervet monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the masculine toys, and the female vervet monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the feminine toys. The two sexes did not differ in their preference for the neutral toys.”

    Answer/s:

  • A nurturing quality in someones curiosity and fascination with certain toys are not necessarily gender specific. Many boys enjoy playing with the human formed doll. Many boys love to pretend to cook and to dress up in different action type clothing. Girls like to play soccer, wrestle, build etc… Girls and boys both have the inclination to play with the human formed doll. It is really when people have interfered with the child’s natural curiosity when you will see a significant difference in the number of male/female children who will play with “Masculine or Feminine” play things. The interference may just be in the body language and overheard conversations about what a specific gender should be spending their time doing. I think that even vervet monkeys practice what will be helpful to them in their survival.

  • Somehow I missed out on this “inclination” towards girl toys. I NEVER played with dolls. I had 5 children and did a creditable job of being a nurturing mother, however. I wanted active toys and dumb dolls only laid there.

  • i think you can teach children to have the ‘inclination’ to play with gender appropriate toys without actively enouraging them to do so. for example, when a baby is born, their gender is immediately identified by either a pink or blue blanket. if you look in the toys section of any store, you can tell from a distance which toys are for girls and which are for boys. society can’t tell a baby what to play with or what colours to prefer, but their parents, who are agents in society can. parents aren’t bad for doing this, they just want the best for their kids. it is definitely much more complicated than this, but i’m not going to write out a 10 page essay explaining it lol. i think it is very dangerous to assume that there is something biological in women that makes them want to play with dolls and cooking pots. if women do just want to wear dresses and spend their days in the kitchen, there shouldn’t be struggles for women’s employment rights, pay equity, education, etc. although the idea of ‘femininity’ seems harmless, it puts women in a less powerful position.

  • That is a stereotype, just like boys were to play war or cowboys and indians.

Is it haram to make flash games with cartoon characters in Islam?

    Question:

Its Haram in Islam to draw pictures and to make sculptures, but does it extend to drawing cartoon characters and make them alive on PC by adding animations on keystrokes, I mean like in flash games. I wana make flash cartoon games, just want to know.

    Answer/s:

  • You really should ask your Iman. I think that you can make your flash cartoon games. Cartoons are used widely in Muslim countries in the Middle East. Disney Comics does an active business in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Yemen, Egypt, Jordan Political cartoons with all sorts of people with eyes are also common in Muslim countries. Museums in Islamic countries exhibit sculptures. See the sources below.

  • Here’s an answer to a similar question, i hope it helps : Praise be to Allaah. If the animated pictures are of inanimate things – such as trees and cars – there is nothing wrong with producing them or watching them, because they are just drawings. But if they are of animate things – such as human beings and animals – then this is something concerning which contemporary scholars differed. The scholars of the Standing Committee are of the view that it is not allowed to make animated pictures and cartoons even if they are for shar’i purposes. In a fatwa of the Standing Committee (no. 19933, dated 9/11/1418 AH) it says: It is not permissible to buy, sell or use cartoon movies, because they include haraam images. Raising children should be done in ways that are Islamically acceptable with regard to teaching, disciplining, telling them to pray and taking good care of them. Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz, Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez Aal al-Shaykh, Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd. Shaykh al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was of the view that it is permissible, as we have quoted him in the answer to question no. 71170. Based on the view that it is permissible, the one who produces them has to pay attention to a number of things, such as: 1- Not showing prominent figures or leaders of islam in funny ways, or showing them as saying things that they did not say. 2- Not including music in films and animated pictures. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: There are some reservations. They should not attribute to any of the leaders of these conquests things that they did not say. This is the problem. I think that if these movies contain only that which is good, then there is nothing wrong with them, in sha Allaah. But if they are accompanied by music then this is not permissible, because music is haraam. Liqaa’aat al-Baab il-Maftooh (127/question no. 10). In some of our answers we have stated that electronic games are not permissible for children or adults if they include any music. For more information please see the answers to questions no. 2898 and 39744. 3- Not showing men or women with their ‘awrahs uncovered or doing any haraam actions or actions of kufr such as wearing a cross or worshipping idols, even if that is for the purpose of teaching and acting. 4- These films and animated pictures should convey a good message, or include things that teach good morals. 5- The drawings and images should not resemble the creation of Allaah, so that the small child will not think that there is someone who makes things like the creation of Allaah. 6- There should be no veneration of any bid’ah (innovation) or innovator, or of any evil deed or evildoer, and it should not include any mention of any innovated or haraam occasion such as celebrating the Prophet’s birthday or anyone else’s birthday. 7- There should be no representation of the Prophets or Sahaabah, even if the stories are true. See the answer to question no. 14488. See also the answer to question no. 10836 for more important guidelines in addition to what we have mentioned here. Whatever the case: The producer should think about what he is going to produce for the new generation, because they are going to be influenced by what they hear and see. So he should strive to convey the pure message of Islam and play a role in giving children an Islamic upbringing. So he should include in his films and cartoons respect for and teaching of prayer, honouring one’s parents and reminders of their rights, and other great Islamic virtues, as well as warning against disobedience to parents, lying, severing family ties and so on. We hope that the good things in these drawings and films will outweigh the evils of image-making and drawing. If there was unanimous agreement among the scholars we would not have said that it is permissible, even if there are numerous benefits in it, but because there are texts which make an exception for toys, even if they resemble animate beings, for children, and there are some of our scholars who say that it is permissible, we have inclined towards the view that it is allowed. And Allaah knows best.

  • Well the reason drawing pictures with eyes and making sculpture is because it seems like were trying to recreate God’s creation. So to answer your question: as long as you don’t put any eyes on them I don’t see why not.

Could it be posible that bratz dolls could be causeing young girls to see them selves as sex objects?

    Question:

The dolls disproprtionet head to body ratio makes the dolls look anarexic and the clothing looks like a striper or and prostute. Could this be damaging to young girls and encourage early sexual expermentation and promesquity? I mean is it just me or do toys and products afect children? I mean they made a tv show promoteing the toys and to grow a fan base. now they are puting out a movie and the credits look horifing. I saw a preview and it scared me, I mean what if a child saw something like that and who elce dose that kinda thing apeal to? Thoughts and coments ect..

    Answer/s:

  • Absolutely – I think the whole Bratz empire is horrid and would not subject any young girl to it – or young boy for that matter.

  • I had a braz doll and I was fine so i gess it would be safe for young girls.

  • I’m surprised how you can even connect Bratz dolls with sexual experimentations. Toys are meant to be toys(and hereby, I meant Toys-R-Us toys). Only adults would even think that the dolls look like a sexual object and this is only because we, adults, have been exposed widely to such subject. No children would think of it in a sexually way UNLESS they have been fed with such information by another source(overheard conversations, movies etc) beforehand. Now, whose fault is that? If parents(and the adults around them) instil continuous positive values on the kids, they will eventually grow up being the better human being.
